About Oxybutynin (Topical)
Topical oxybutynin is compounded as a 3% to 10% cream or gel and prescribed off-label for hyperhidrosis, and less often for overactive bladder in patients who cannot tolerate oral oxybutynin. The commercial oxybutynin gel is approved for bladder symptoms and applied to the abdomen or thigh, so compounding covers sweating sites and strengths the commercial product does not. Applied where sweating is a problem, it reduces gland activity with fewer whole-body anticholinergic effects than tablets. A prescription is required and the prescriber sets the strength and application area.
