Why compounded prescriptions fall through the cracks of ordinary e-prescribing
E-prescribing works beautifully for manufactured drugs. Compounded preparations break three of its assumptions.
There is no NDC to pick
A compounded preparation is not a manufactured product, so the prescribing screens in most EHRs force it into free text built for retail drugs. Ingredient lists get truncated, strengths lose their units, and the pharmacy receives "see notes".
The right pharmacy is not in the directory
The compounding pharmacy that can actually make the preparation, in the patient's state, may not appear in your EHR's pharmacy list at all. Staff fall back to fax, phone calls and re-sending.
The price is a surprise
Quoted prices for the same compounded prescription routinely differ by 2x or more between pharmacies. Patients who learn the price only when the pharmacy calls often never fill.

Verify your NPI, create a free account
Sign in with your work email and add your prescriber profile: name, credential, NPI, state license, practice phone. We check the NPI against the CMS registry and verify new prescribers before the first prescription goes out.
Write the compounded prescription
Search the medication and see the formulations and strengths pharmacies in the network list, or write any custom compound. Structured fields for strength, form, quantity, sig, refills, base or vehicle and excipient exclusions, plus a built-in pre-check for the details pharmacies ask about.
Sign it electronically
Type your name against the attestation. We render a complete signed prescription document with your identity, license and contact details, the patient's details, and a timestamped e-signature.
Pharmacies quote, your patient chooses
Licensed U.S. compounding pharmacies quote price, turnaround and shipping, usually within 1 to 2 business days. Your patient compares them and picks one. The signed prescription and the patient's contact details go to that pharmacy only, and it contacts the patient to arrange payment and delivery.

Not a Surescripts or NCPDP SCRIPT connection
The prescription is delivered as a prescriber-signed electronic prescription document through Compounding Finder's secure pharmacy portal, after the patient selects the pharmacy. It does not travel over the Surescripts network. Whether that satisfies an e-prescribing mandate in your state depends on that state's rules and exemptions; you remain responsible for meeting them.
No controlled substances
Electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) requires DEA-certified software with identity proofing and two-factor signing. This tool does not have that certification and refuses controlled substances outright. Use your EPCS-certified system for those.
We do not prescribe or dispense
You decide what is clinically appropriate. The dispensing pharmacy decides whether it can make the preparation and verifies the prescription as it would any other. Compounding Finder connects the two.
Patient information is handled under HIPAA business associate agreements
Your practice accepts our Provider Business Associate Agreement inside the tool before its first prescription, every pharmacy in the network operates under its own signed Business Associate Agreement with us, and patient identity is released only to the pharmacy the patient selects.

What does "e-prescribing" mean on Compounding Finder?
You write and electronically sign a compounded prescription in your browser. We render a complete, prescriber-signed electronic prescription document and deliver it electronically to the licensed compounding pharmacy your patient selects, through our secure pharmacy portal. It is not a Surescripts or NCPDP SCRIPT transmission and it is not EPCS.
Is e-prescribing really free for providers and clinics?
Yes. There is no subscription and no per-prescription charge for practices, and your patient pays nothing to Compounding Finder either. We are paid a connection fee by the pharmacy the patient chooses, which is how the patient-facing quote service has always worked.
Can I prescribe controlled substances?
No. Controlled substances require DEA-certified EPCS software with identity proofing and two-factor signing. The composer refuses them and tells you why. Testosterone, ketamine, oxandrolone and other scheduled drugs must go through your EPCS-certified system.
How do you verify that I am a prescriber?
Your NPI has to pass the checksum, match your name in the CMS NPPES registry, and belong to an active individual provider. A person at Compounding Finder then approves the account, usually within one business day. Prescriptions you write in the meantime are held and released automatically on approval.
What does my patient see?
An email explaining that you sent their compounded prescription to Compounding Finder to get pricing from licensed pharmacies, followed by the quotes when they arrive, usually within 1 to 2 business days. They pick a pharmacy, and that pharmacy contacts them to arrange payment and delivery. They can ignore it and fill elsewhere.
Does the pharmacy see the prescription before it quotes?
It sees the clinical content: medication, strength, form, quantity, directions, compounding notes, and the fact that a prescriber-signed prescription is on file. It does not see the patient's or the prescriber's identity until the patient selects it. The selected pharmacy then receives the signed prescription document and the patient's contact details.
Which medications can I search?
More than 180 commonly compounded medications, each showing the dosage forms and strengths compounding pharmacies in the network list, and whether it can be filled in your patient's state. Anything not listed can be written as a custom compound.
Can I send the prescription to a specific compounding pharmacy?
Not yet. In this release licensed pharmacies that can fill the prescription in the patient's state quote it, and the patient chooses among them. If you have a preferred pharmacy, say so in the compounding notes and tell your patient; if it is in the network, it will be invited to quote.
Do I need a Business Associate Agreement to use it?
Yes, and it is built in. Before your first prescription, a person with authority for your practice accepts our standard Provider Business Associate Agreement from the prescriber profile page. Pharmacies in the network sign their own agreement with us, and patient identity reaches only the pharmacy the patient selects.
Do I need an EHR integration?
No. It runs in the browser. Sign in with your work email; there is no software to install and no interface to build.
What about refills and changes?
Refills you authorize are dispensed directly between the pharmacy and your patient, like any prescription. To change or cancel a prescription, reply to your confirmation email with the prescription ID and we will handle it with the pharmacy.
