About Skincare Actives
Dermatology compounding combines multiple prescription actives into a single topical to improve adherence and deliver results that single-ingredient commercial products cannot match. Classic combinations include the Kligman formula (hydroquinone + tretinoin + topical steroid) for melasma, tretinoin + clindamycin for inflammatory acne, and azelaic acid + tranexamic acid + kojic acid for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Compounded tretinoin avoids the irritancy of some commercial vehicles and is available in custom strengths (0.01% to 0.1%) and bases (cream, gel, emollient). Topical tranexamic acid is a melasma treatment not available as an FDA-approved product in the U.S.
