PDE5 Inhibitors
Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors — sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil — used for erectile dysfunction and, in some cases, pulmonary hypertension.
About PDE5 Inhibitors
PDE5 inhibitors block the enzyme that breaks down cGMP, promoting smooth muscle relaxation and blood flow. Commercial tablets (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and their generics) are well-established, but compounding pharmacies prepare sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil as troches, rapid-dissolve tablets, and liquid suspensions — useful for patients with dysphagia, unusual doses (e.g., daily low-dose tadalafil), or combination preparations. Patients who do not respond adequately to oral PDE5 inhibitors may be prescribed compounded injection therapy (trimix, bimix) instead.
