Hair Loss Medications

Finasteride, dutasteride, minoxidil, and spironolactone in topical and oral formulations for androgenetic alopecia and related hair loss conditions.

About Hair Loss

Hair loss medications fall into two broad mechanisms: 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride, dutasteride) that block the conversion of testosterone to DHT, and vasodilators / hair follicle stimulators (minoxidil). Spironolactone is an anti-androgen used in female pattern hair loss. Compounding pharmacies prepare custom topical combinations (e.g., minoxidil + finasteride, or minoxidil + spironolactone) and low-dose oral minoxidil — a formulation not commercially available but widely prescribed by dermatologists for androgenetic alopecia. Topical formulations reduce systemic 5-alpha reductase inhibition versus oral, which matters to patients concerned about sexual side effects.
