EDTA is a chelating agent that forms stable complexes with divalent and trivalent metal cations (lead, mercury, cadmium, calcium, zinc, magnesium). These metal-EDTA complexes are water-soluble and excreted in urine. Disodium EDTA is used for lead and heavy metal chelation; calcium EDTA (CaNa2EDTA) is preferred for acute lead poisoning. The TACT trial showed disodium EDTA reduced cardiovascular events in post-MI diabetics.
EDTA chelation infusions are not commercially available as ready-to-use products. Each infusion must be prepared as a sterile compounded solution with EDTA plus supportive nutrients (magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin C) to protect against mineral depletion during chelation.

EDTA chelation has been used in medicine since the 1950s for lead poisoning. The NIH-funded TACT (Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy) trial demonstrated statistically significant reductions in cardiovascular events with EDTA chelation in post-MI diabetics, lending scientific credibility to cardiovascular applications. Practitioners follow the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) protocol.
Heavy metal toxicity (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic), cardiovascular disease (integrative/ACAM protocol), peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease, post-MI therapy (off-label).
ACAM cardiovascular protocol: Disodium EDTA 3g in 500mL solution with magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin C infused over 3 hours; typically 20–30 infusions initially. Maintenance: monthly. Heavy metal toxicity: individualized per toxicology protocol.
Hypocalcemia (life-threatening if disodium EDTA infused too rapidly), kidney stress/damage (slow infusion and hydration essential), mineral depletion (zinc, magnesium, calcium). Fatigue after infusion common. MUST be administered by trained practitioners following ACAM protocols.
