Anticonvulsant / Neuropathic Pain Agent Drug Class

Anticonvulsants reduce neuronal excitability and are widely used for neuropathic pain, seizure disorders, fibromyalgia, and anxiety. Compounded topical formulations allow local delivery to painful areas without systemic sedation.

How It Works

Gabapentin and pregabalin bind to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, reducing neuronal calcium influx and excitatory neurotransmitter release. This dampens pain signal transmission and epileptic activity.

Why Compounded?

Topical gabapentin, pregabalin, and amitriptyline formulations deliver medication locally with minimal systemic absorption. Custom dose oral formulations, combination compounds for neuropathic pain, and liquid versions for dysphagic patients require compounding.

Common Uses

  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Postherpetic neuralgia (shingles pain)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)
