Prevents mast cells from degranulating — stopping the release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other inflammatory mediators before they trigger symptoms.
Blocks histamine H1 receptors directly at target tissues — a second line of action that manages symptoms even when some mediator release occurs.
Compounded prednisolone oral liquid allows precise weight-based corticosteroid dosing in cats — critical for managing IBD, lymphoma, and inflammatory conditions in felines who cannot efficiently convert prednisone.

Prednisolone is an active corticosteroid that suppresses inflammatory pathways and immune cell activity.
Cats metabolize prednisolone differently than dogs and cannot efficiently convert prednisone. Compounded liquid allows weight-based dosing not available in standard commercial tablets.
Prednisolone is the preferred corticosteroid for cats. Unlike dogs and humans, cats have limited ability to convert prednisone into its active form, prednisolone, in the liver. For this reason, veterinarians prescribe prednisolone directly rather than prednisone for feline patients.
Compounded prednisolone oral liquid is particularly valuable because commercial prednisolone tablets come in limited sizes (1mg, 5mg) that often require awkward splitting for small cats or precise low-dose protocols. A flavored compounded liquid allows accurate weight-based dosing and is far easier to administer to cats who resist tablets.
Prednisolone binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors and translocates to the nucleus, where it modulates gene transcription. This suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reduces immune cell proliferation, and inhibits the inflammatory cascade at multiple points.
At immunosuppressive doses, prednisolone significantly reduces lymphocyte activity, making it effective for immune-mediated conditions including IBD and small cell lymphoma.
In cats, prednisolone oral liquid is most commonly used for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), small cell lymphoma, asthma, eosinophilic conditions, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and various dermatologic inflammatory disorders. It is also used as part of multi-drug chemotherapy protocols.

Short-term side effects include increased thirst, urination, and appetite (PU/PD/PP). Long-term use at high doses can cause iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, muscle wasting, diabetes mellitus, and increased susceptibility to infections (particularly upper respiratory infections).
Cats are generally more resistant to steroid side effects than dogs but are not immune. Regular monitoring of blood glucose is recommended for cats on long-term therapy, particularly those predisposed to diabetes.
