Metronidazole disrupts DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, effectively treating infections and reducing intestinal inflammation.
Commercial metronidazole tablets are bitter and difficult to administer to dogs. Compounded flavored suspension improves palatability and allows weight-based dosing.
Metronidazole is a broad-spectrum antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent widely used in veterinary medicine. Commercial metronidazole tablets are notoriously bitter, making administration to dogs extremely difficult — many dogs will spit out tablets, foam at the mouth, or refuse food with crushed tablets mixed in.
Compounded metronidazole flavored suspension eliminates this problem by masking the bitterness with palatable flavoring (chicken, beef, or bacon) in a liquid formulation dosed by syringe. Custom concentrations allow precise dosing for any size dog.
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. In anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa, it is reduced to a reactive intermediate that damages DNA by causing strand breaks, disrupting replication and killing the organism. It is selectively toxic to organisms that lack oxygen-based metabolism.
In addition to its antimicrobial effects, metronidazole has direct anti-inflammatory effects on the GI tract, making it useful for inflammatory conditions even in the absence of infection.
In dogs, metronidazole suspension is used for acute diarrhea, giardiasis, inflammatory bowel disease, Clostridium infections, periodontal disease, and anaerobic bacterial infections. It is frequently used as a first-line treatment for acute GI upset in dogs.

Even in the flavored compounded form, high doses of metronidazole can cause neurologic toxicity in dogs, including ataxia, tremors, and seizures. This is rare at standard doses but can occur with prolonged use at high doses.
More common side effects include mild nausea, decreased appetite, and diarrhea (paradoxically). Metronidazole should not be used long-term without veterinary oversight.
