HOW IT WORKS

Mast cell stabilization

Prevents mast cells from degranulating — stopping the release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other inflammatory mediators before they trigger symptoms.

H1 receptor antagonism

Blocks histamine H1 receptors directly at target tissues — a second line of action that manages symptoms even when some mediator release occurs.

How it works

Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, energy utilization, and insulin sensitivity. Supplementation supports horses with EMS and clinically documented hypothyroidism.

Why compounded?

No FDA-approved equine thyroid product exists. Horses require large, weight-appropriate doses that can only be practically delivered as compounded oral powder or paste.

Compounded Thyroid Hormone (T3/T4) for Horses

Thyroid hormone supplementation in horses is used for equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and clinically documented hypothyroidism. While true hypothyroidism is less common in horses than in dogs, thyroid supplementation is sometimes used as part of weight management and metabolic support protocols, particularly in horses with EMS who are at risk for laminitis.

No FDA-approved thyroid hormone product exists for horses, making compounding the only available route. Compounded T3 (liothyronine) and T4 (levothyroxine) or combination T3/T4 preparations are prepared as oral powder or paste in equine-appropriate doses — far larger than human or canine equivalents.

How it Works

Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) regulate the basal metabolic rate, energy substrate utilization, insulin sensitivity, and thermogenesis. T4 is a prohormone that is converted to the more active T3 in peripheral tissues.

Supplementation with exogenous thyroid hormone increases metabolic rate, promotes fat mobilization, and can improve insulin sensitivity in horses with EMS — reducing laminitis risk in susceptible horses.

Common Uses

Compounded thyroid hormone is used in horses for equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) as a metabolic support adjunct, obesity management in horses resistant to dietary restriction, and hypothyroidism in horses with documented low thyroid function. It is sometimes used short-term to initiate weight loss before transitioning to dietary management alone.

Side Effects

The primary risk is over-supplementation causing signs of hyperthyroidism: increased heart rate, sweating, muscle wasting, and hyperexcitability. Starting at low doses and monitoring heart rate and body condition is recommended.

Thyroid hormone supplementation should be tapered rather than stopped abruptly to avoid rebound hypothyroidism. Regular thyroid panel monitoring guides dose adjustments.
